Seafood value chain

Farming of fish follows the same cycle of reproduction, growth and maturation as takes place in the wild. Our ABC-guide to salmon farming helps you understand what it is all about.

Our aquaculture value chain has five linked sections: Freshwater, Seawater, Harvesting, Processing and Distribution. We farm fish in several countries, including Norway, Chile, Canada, Scotland and Ireland. Although some details of the way this is done may vary, the principles are the same everywhere. We illustrate this by describing what happens with Atlantic salmon, which is our most farmed fish.

There are special names for the fish at each life stage. The sequence is broodstock, spawning, viable (eyed) eggs Bullet A, alevins Bullet B, fry Bullet C, parr, smolt and adult Bullet D.

Throughout the farming sequence, from closed tanks on land to net cages in open water, we pay great attention to ensuring high standards of hygiene and fish welfare and to the sustainability of our activities. The sites for the farms must meet high standards with regard to factors such as water circulation, water quality, water temperature, depth beneath the pens and distance from other sites. You can find more information in the section on Corporate Responsibility in Marine Harvest.
