Schizophrenia is a complex area, but several studies indicate that omega-3 fatty acids can have a positive effect.
Schizophrenia is a complex area, and current understanding suggests there must be a genetic predisposition involving several genes for the disease to develop. Even so, several studies have indicated omega-3 fatty acids do appear to play a role.
For example, in India, 28 male and female schizophrenic patients who were taking medication were given low-dose supplements of omega-3 fatty acids (600mg/day) together with vitamins C and E. In a pre-treatment assessment in comparison with a control group of normal people of similar age, the patients had significantly lower levels of DHA and EPA in their red blood cell membranes; a measure of its availability in the body. After four months the levels in the patients had risen significantly compared with the controls. The patients also had significantly improved psychiatric ratings and quality of life ratings.
