Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue

Marine Harvest takes an active part in the Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue, initiated by WWF-US in 2004. The aim of the Dialgoue is to produce an environmental standard for farmed salmon by 2010.

Jose Villalon, Director Aquaculture Program, WWF-US, says "It's energizing to see how the industry sector has embraced this certification program; I look forward to working side-by-side with the industry to make it a worldwide success."

Salmon producers, buyers, retailers and others throughout the world have  joined forces in the dialogue initiated by the WWF to create standards for certifying aquaculture products. The standards will minimize the key environmental and social impacts associated with aquaculture. The Dialogue is managed by a Steering Committe, where Marine Harvest is represented through Technical Director Petter Arnesen.

The goals of the Dialogue:

  • to develop and implement verifiable environmental and social performance levels that measurably reduce or eliminate the key impacts of salmon farming and are acceptable to stakeholders
  •  to recommend standards that achieve these performance levels while permitting the salmon farming industry to remain economically viable.

The Dialogue ensures open and transparent dissemination of information between the stakeholders participating, and the aim is to finalise the process by early 2010.  You can find more information about the Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue here.
