Undesirable substances

Undesirable substances include those that may be present at trace levels in the aquatic environment or in raw materials used in fish feed (e.g. dioxins, PCBs and heavy metals) and residues of medicines used to treat disease.

We have a global monitoring and control programme for undesirable substances. An annually updated priority list defines which substances to monitor for and the frequencies at which analyses are needed. These analyses can only be performed for us in laboratories accredited by Marine Harvest and following approved methods.

Medicines may be used for health and welfare reasons during the production cycle. We strictly observe the specified withdrawal periods and check for any residues before harvest.
