Waste and energy

We have identified three areas in which to focus attention on waste management. These are solid waste, mortalities and organic waste.

Recycling is a good option for solid waste, especially for feed bags. These are recycled in almost all Marine Harvest farming operations. Programmes to reduce waste and increase recycling are in place in all Marine Harvest businesses.

Mortalities are in general incinerated or put into silage, to avoid pollution of the marine environment.

Organic waste comes mainly from feed and faeces. This topic is discussed in the section on biodiversity. It is in our own interest, and that of our neighbours, to keep the waters where we are working clean and healthy.

Another important part of our environmental policy relates to energy use. Many of our farming operations and most of our processing plants are ISO 14001 certified. This means that they pay attention to reducing their genereal environmental impacts, for example through reduced use of energy and by finding more environmentally friendly energy sources.
